USPS 002704 winter has subsided and is giving way to warmth , blooming flowers , and beautiful renewal ! Along with this change of the season , we at the Berkeley Roundhouse have decided to switch things up a bit and go in a more fun direction this time around .
Sometimes we focus so much on the heavy issues and the responsibility we have in perpetuating our cultures in the face of so many challenges that we forget to take time to focus on what brings us joy . Thus , we are so happy to share this very special issue all about love . Yep , get ready for some Springtime Love !
The theme for this issue came from many places — naturally — since there is love everywhere in our tribal communities . It came from people sharing funny stories about their family members getting caught up in love triangles and other “ rez tales .” It came from a desire to explore more risqué topics . Finally , it came from wanting to take a real look at California Indian life .
After all , there are a lot of people who don ’ t know our communities very well and associate Native people with tragedy . Yes , there are sad pieces to our history . But we are far more than this . Overall , I believe our history is a triumph . And the beautiful people who grace the covers of this issue are amazing living proof to this fact . Not only have they stepped forward to be on the cover of News , they have stepped forward in their communities with commitments to strengthening their cultures .
We trust that this issue will be a delightful adventure to read . It was a lot of fun developing it and putting it together . It is filled with words and images of love . For our cover story , News partner Vincent Medina compiled an adorable feature with the voices of some of our favorite California Indian couples sharing the stories of how they met . Gordon Johnson carries the imagination away to a familiar dreamland in a fiction piece called “ Indian Love .” Vikki Preston has shared breathtaking photos from her amazing homeland . “ In Our Languages ” shares several different ways to express affection across California . Bonnie Lockhart and Linda Yamane share their love for their grandmothers . Finally , this spring marks the hundred-year anniversary of Ishi ’ s death . Thus we are featuring a special tribute about what he shared with the world .
In these times when it seems that turmoil surrounds us , what we need now — and always — is a lot of love . It ’ s so important to acknowledge those who care for us , to call for the things we desire , and to feel our deepest happinesses . This is what we asked for . And just as could be expected by our tribal communities , we received a lot of it .

BACK COVER : Native couples from every corner of California celebrate their connections of love , culture , and family . Their stories are featured in detail in this issue of News .
CORRECTIONS : In the Winter 2015 / 16 “ Big Times / Little Times ,” we mistakenly stated that the Tribal Alliance for Sovereign Indian Nations ( TASIN ) was celebrating its thirtieth anniversary . TASIN actually just celebrated its twentieth anniversary . Yet and still , a huge milestone . Congratulations !
