Part of the project involved moving walls within the existing kitchen space to create a scullery and to open up the kitchen to the living room, sunlight and views. This is a family home so seating was required for four people. Although the kitchen space now looks generous, one of the challenges was that the wall at the rear was not wide in proportion to the home’s size. This wall needed to house the oven tower, cooking centre, refrigerator and also the entrance to the scullery. This space has visually gained in proportion by making the cooking centre as wide as possible, with a massive sheet stainless steel extractor box. Horizontal slats have also been used below the hob bench, exaggerating the lineal proportions of this area. A relaxed, comfortable feel has been achieved by minimising the use of different materials, and by contrasting the modern, sharp-looking stainless steel with natural driftwood-style slats that shroud the island. A dishevelled uniformity is achieved by using roughsawn slats that are individual in height as well as thickness. Judges’ comments This is a beautifully presented kitchen reminiscent of a Scandinavian palette, but it’s also one that displays innovative and creative detailing. The kitchen highlights a particularly innovative use of timber on the island, and a clever detail on drawer fronts. search | save | share at trendsideas.com
