Foundational discoveries in neuroscience , not to mention older , tangible page-in-hand , as well as novel online ways of reading , and learning something new , are catalysts that enable this pattern .
That ’ s how the book Mindshift emerged . I write , after all , and Mindshift is a channeling of the changes I ’ ve viewed springing forth in people around the world .

Barbara Oakley is a professor of engineering , writer , and instructor of the world ’ s largest online class , Learning How to Learn , with nearly 2 million registered students . Her previous book , A Mind for Numbers ( TarcherPerigee , 2014 ), was a New York Times science best-seller . Her newest book , Mindshift : Break Through Obstacles to Learning and Discover Your Hidden Potential , is emerging as a breakthrough standout for 2017 .
Barb ’ s work focuses on the complex relationship between neuroscience and social behavior . Her research has been described as “ revolutionary ” in the Wall Street Journal — she has published in outlets as varied as the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences , the Wall Street Journal , and The New York Times . She has won numerous teaching awards , including the American Society of Engineering Education ’ s Chester F . Carlson Award for technical innovation in engineering education . She serves as the Ramón y Cajal Distinguished Scholar of Global Digital Learning at McMaster University and Coursera ’ s inaugural “ Innovation Instructor .”
Barb has adventured widely through her lifetime . She rose from the ranks of Private to Captain in the U . S . Army , during which time she was recognized as a Distinguished Military Scholar . She also worked as a communications expert at the South Pole Station in Antarctica , and has served as a
