Kiawah ’ s Classroom : A Visit to the Maritime Forest Reserve and Nature Trail

In September of 2016 Island naturalist Brogin Van Skoik lead a group fourth-graders from Charleston Collegiate School through the Kiawah Conservancy ’ s newly renovated Maritime Forest Reserve and Nature Trail for a hands-on lesson in maritime forest succession , plant life , and wildlife use . The 16 students and four adults learned more than they bargained for . They prepared for their visit by studying the characteristics of barrier islands and the nature of Kiawah Island in their classroom .
