Photographing Kiawah: How the Pros See Us E By Tina Schell ach year the Kiawah Island Photography Club hosts a number of professional photographers who come in to help club members improve their skills. Typically, these visits will include a presentation, which is illustrated by examples of their work, a photography shoot for a limited number of members, and a critique of participating members’ results following the shoot, which is open to all club members. Participants feel strongly that this is one of the best ways to develop new skills and to see our beautiful environment with “new eyes.” Many of the professionals who have visited over the years are seeing Kiawah for the first time. Typically, they will come in early to partner with a club member “scouting” for the best location, and often they will stay a bit longer to enjoy (and often shoot) some of Kiawah’s outstanding natural beauty. It is always rewarding to hear professional photographers who have seen some of the most incredible scenery the world offers raving about the nature we enjoy on a daily basis. Thanks to the cooperation of the KI Photography Club, and the generosity of the artists, we are able to present the remarkable images of several of the nationally renowned photographers who have visited with us over the years. Alongside their work, we have included some of the results of the local club members who participated in their workshops. One thing is certain; Kiawah presents as beautiful a landscape as you will find anywhere. As Dorothy once said, there really IS “No place like home.” Denise Ippolito 14 Naturally Kiawah
