5. School Nursing… A Profession That Makes a Difference

School Nursing is a specialty, requiring specific education and expertise in nursing, public health, and teaching in order to effectively deal with the numerous student and staff health challenges facing schools.

A 2013 NASN survey found that School Nurses have, on average, 23 years of nursing experience, and 11 years experience as a School Nurse.

Yet School Nurses earn an average salary of $44,984 to $54,726, often less than school counselors and school librarians.

The American Nurses Association reported that in 2010, the average salary for a School Nurse was $43,893 – while the average salary for Nurses overall was $67,720 (54.2% higher).

School Nurses are a vital part of the health of our schools and communities. Every school needs a School Nurse every day.
