antucket ’ s rich history – from a sleepy 17th-century farming community to its centenary reign as Whaling Capital of the World , to its current incarnation as an art and resort colony – is replete with many facets that contribute to its inimitable charm . This charm is owed , at least in part , to the ongoing – and fiercely dedicated – conservancy of its remarkable resources , both natural and built .
The island is fortunate to boast some of the finest 18th and early 19th-century architecture in the nation . Its historic core was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1966 , a designation extended to the entire island in 1971 . Since 1955 , the Nantucket Historic District Commission has regulated the exterior appearance of new construction as well as changes made to existing structures throughout the island in an effort to safeguard Nantucket ’ s historical integrity . Thanks to the stringent efforts of the island ’ s Conservation Foundation and Land Bank , acres of conservation land remain untamed , evidenced by glorious open vistas like the Serengeti-like Middle Moors bordering the Milestone Road .
In terms of architectural stewardship and preservation , the house at 55 Union Street is a shining jewel . For decades , it sat undisturbed and dilapidated , time-worn and weary . Local resident Ginger Andrews spearheaded its preservation , assuring that this historic gem would continue to stand sentinel for years to come . Constructed in 1835 by prolific island builder John B . Nicholson – and long owned by the Andrews Family – this property was purchased by preservationists and lovingly restored , maintaining its architectural integrity .
Nantucket Preservation Trust presents annual awards to individuals and organizations enhancing the cause of on-island historic preservation . These awards showcase Nantucket ’ s remarkable craftspeople and building professionals , recognizing their careful and abiding supervision of historic properties and indigenous landscape , as well as excellence in utilizing traditional building methods and designs .
