Meticulous preservation of the island ’ s historic structures has been integral to maintaining the “ authentic ” ambiance of the Faraway Island . The Nantucket Whaling Museum , chronicling the island ’ s centurylong reign as Whaling Capital of the World , was fully restored in 2005 and has been accredited by the American Association of Museums . The 18th-century buildings currently home to the Dreamland Film and Performing Arts Center , Community Music Center and Culinary Center have also been lovingly renovated to maintain their historical integrity while creating vibrant public spaces for community gatherings and educational programs . As such , the downtown ’ s sense of place is preserved while enhancing cultural and economic activity , particularly in the shoulder season .
By promoting collaboration of local cultural organizations , with an eye toward enriching community life for both residents and visitors , the Nantucket Cultural District Committee is on a sure course to maintain and enhance the island ’ s economic strength and authenticity , insuring that the “ The Little Grey Lady of the Sea ” is preserved for future generations .
