t ’ s quite astounding when you consider the myriad service and transportational offerings our 47-square-mile island has to offer . In fact , nearly every service available on the mainland is readily accessible within our community 30 miles at sea . Of course , the basic necessities are covered . In terms of transport , airlines and ferries convey locals and visitors to and fro , and a fantastic in-season public transit bus to ameliorate the summer traffic shuttles tourists and islanders alike across the island . And the day-today “ essentials ”: schools , churches , markets , a hospital , physicians , home health care , library , landfill , local newspaper , painters , banks , beauty salons , car rental , pet care , trash removal , television , utilities and taxis . ( Although prospective visitors have been known to inquire on occasion : “ Does Nantucket have schools ?” “ Are there supermarkets ?”)
In addition to providing the standard requirements , Nantucket also boasts an impressive array of select services to
cater to most every need , from alarm systems and alterations to water filtration and web design – and everything in between . Case in point : many Nantucket homes , both seasonal and year-round , proudly display iconic quarterboards , a charming centuries-old tradition . You can commission your very own from professional local carvers , replete with unique fonts and flourishes . A host of exceptionally talented on-island photographers — with varied styles to suit your own unique taste — will professionally photograph your wedding or special event . Property managers are available to caretake your summer home and insure that it ’ s ready when you arrive next year . And the list goes on and on …..
