testimony to the abundance of creativity on island , Nantucket ’ s cornucopia of eclectic shops and intimate boutiques showcase a legion of wondrous wares . Many are still owned by women , harking back to the halcyon century of whaling when the dual role of ladies as housekeepers and shopkeepers was not an anomaly . In fact , the Centre Street shopping district was aptly dubbed “ Petticoat Row ,” owing to the preponderance of women merchants .
The island boasts an impressive number of antique shops – featuring nautical pieces such as sailor ’ s trunks , scrimshaw , maps , paintings and lightship baskets in homage to Nantucket ’ s rich maritime history – as well as unique folk art and architectural pieces , estate jewelry , Majolica , and more . What could be more “ sustainable ” than a coveted antique purchased on the “ Faraway Island ” and instantly transformed into a treasured family heirloom ? You ’ ll marvel at the myriad opportunities to window shop – or purchase – a unique piece of history on this island with a past that is ever-present .

To delve even further into the intriguing history of vintage pieces , Antiques Depot sponsors an annual “ Antique Short Story Contest ” encouraging young people , teens and adults to mine their creativity while exploring the fascinating world of special vintage objects . Participants are invited to visit the shop , view the sundry treasures on display , choose a piece that sparks their imagination , and write a fictional “ biography ” following the object through the various imagined hands it has passed through over the years . This contest encourages all age groups to learn more about the island ’ s past and inspires an enduring appreciation of history and heritage . Winning stories are published in the Antiques Depot blog , and are posted on the Chamber of Commerce website . Winners may pick their choice of a grand prize generously donated by Nantucket Bookworks , and be considered for an interview on ACK FM .
