I have been working with dogs since I was five years old. My father
was a dog trainer and passed it on to me. Over the years I have had
the opportunity to observe most breeds of dogs and the way they
communicate with each other and humans. The first part of training
a dog is to open clear lines of communication with them. To begin
you need to understand that dogs are pack animals. The pack and the
structure of the pack is the most important thing to your dog. For the
most productive relationship, I recommend becoming the Alpha of the
pack (the leader).

Special Training for your Rescue Dog
Many kind hearted people prefer to rescue a
dog instead of buying a puppy. I whole heartedly
agree with this practice. Yes their are a few challenges involved, but the eventual bond between
you and a rescue dog is incomparable.
Most likely the dog wont be a puppy, so their
are likely to be some bad habits already formed.
Most of these can be easily corrected with patience, consistency and calm leadership.

But first things first, most likely if your rescuing
a dog, it has been mistreated. This means the
first thing you need to do is establish trust. So
take all of the training much slower. For example, dont worry about having the dog walk well
on a leash at first. If the dog will allow you to pet
it and give it affection, then just pet the dog with
the leash. Make the site of the leash something
that means calm, secure love. Then after the
dog no longer distrust the leash you can put it
on the dog. Tie the leash up so its not dragging
