Join us for an afternoon of music that is perfect for the whole family ! The folk ensemble Zolotoj Plyos returns to the Museum after a sold-out show in 2013 . The group was founded in 1994 in the city of Saratov , Russia . All three members of the group – Alexander Solovov , Elena Sadina , and Sergei Grachev – graduated from the Saratov State Conservatory and currently reside in Belguim . Fantastic Beasts iN Iconography

Lions ! and Dragons ! and Snakes ! OH MY !
Our next exhibition will spotlight the many types of natural and unnatural creatures in iconography , exploring their origins , symbolism , stories , and myriad representations . This exhibit is family friendly , with images and activities that are appealing , accessible , and educational for both adults and children .
Zolotoj Plyos ’ s repertoire includes folk songs and instrumental pieces from various parts of Russia , Ukraine , Belarus , Moldova and Georgia . The trio plays more than thirty Russian folk instruments , including the bayan , chromatic and diatonic accordions , the balalaika , domra , guitar , zhaleika , clarinet , saxophone , various percussion instruments , and Russian bells .

Celebrate the opening of Fantastic Beasts with a day of animal-themed crafts , face-painting , family tours , scavenger hunts , fun snacks , and more ! All activities are ongoing throughout the day .

Introduction to Manuscript

Illumination

Saturday , June 10 , 10:30AM – 3:00PM $ 60 Members , $ 65 Nonmembers ( Includes all materials and Museum admission for the day .) Registration required by May 26 . Call 978.598.5000 x121 . Registration fees are non-refundable .
his hands-on practicum begins with a historical overview of the art of manuscript illumination ,

T followed by detailed instruction in the use of ornamental design , calligraphy , drafting , and gold leaf . Students will take home their own original illumination , a small watercolor set , and beginning drafting materials .

For ages 16 + with intermediate artistic skill and experience . Experience with manuscript illumination is not necessary . A 30-minute lunch break is included in the workshop schedule , though lunch is not provided .
Artist / Instructor Amy Fagin has been creating multi-layered , thematically inspired illuminations that celebrate life and human connections since 1985 . She has taught illumination workshops around the world to students of all ages , from beginners to professional artists .
