VERB: "a word (such as jump, think, happen, or exist ) that is usually one of the main parts of a sentence and that expresses an action, an occurrence, or a state of being"

- Merriam Webster

Do your verbs create a vivid mental picture for the hiring committee, or are they general enough that they could apply to anyone? If you looked at the following examples, which would you select from the application stack for an interview?

Example 1: I worked for CASY & MSCCN for two years. During that time, I talked to applicants about their resumes, organized a new system for applicant data, and wrote multiple training plans.

Example 2: In the two years that I worked with CASY & MSCCN, I consulted with applicants about their resumes and cover letters, enabling them to improve their chances in the job market. I also crafted a new applicant data system and composed training plans using eLearning Articulate Storyline software.

Although the verbs in Example 1 describe the applicant’s experiences, they don’t give us a good sense of what that experience looked like. We can’t tell how effective the applicant’s work was, or envision the projects she worked on. The lack of specifics in Example 1 makes the applicant less memorable, and possibly less attractive to a company. (continued on the next page.)
