Mount Carmel Foundation Annual Report 2016 Annual Report | Page 8

Building A Better Community As the only Catholic healthcare provider in central Ohio, Mount Carmel is a beacon of faith, hope and service in our community. By supporting Mount Carmel’s mission-driven programs and services, the Foundation helps turn students into nurses, couples into families, cancer patients into survivors, and emergencies into happy endings. And thanks to exciting construction projects underway at Mount Carmel East and Grove City, and the redevelopment we’ll soon see at Mount Carmel West, we’ll be able to continue to fulfill our mission, advance our ministries and provide exceptional healthcare to everyone we serve. Together we’re building a better community. The Mount Carmel Crime and Trauma Assistance Program is helping adults and children heal from the wounds of violent crime through trauma-focused therapy. It is available at no cost and is the only program of its kind in Franklin County. The von Zychlin Healthy Living Center at Mount Carmel West is transforming lives through numerous health and wellness services, including cooking classes, breastfeeding support, childbirth education, diabetes education and more. Seven outstanding residency programs and hundreds of continuing education opportunities for our physicians and medical professionals ensure our care teams are on the cutting edge. The Mobile Medical Coach and Street Medicine Program are vital parts of central Ohio’s healthcare safety net, providing free quality care to uninsured and underinsured patients and our homeless neighbors. Countless programs and services are helping turn more cancer patients into survivors, and providing hope to families. The Welcome Home Program is working to reduce Franklin County’s high infant mortality rate by making home visits to monitor physical, psychological, and social issues that can interfere with the health and welfare of mothers and babies. With 40% of the current nursing work force expected to retire in the next 10 years, there has never been a greater need for nurses or nursing education, which makes Foundation support of the Mount Carmel College of Nursing more critical than ever. 6 The only faith-based hospice program in central Ohio, Mount Carmel provides expert end-of-life care and emotional and spiritual support for grieving patients and families, as well as medication and supplies for low-income families. Our Women’s Health programs provide mammograms for uninsured and underinsured women, wigs and prostheses for underserved cancer patients, and camisoles for mastectomy patients free of charge.
