Readiness of Biathletes

March 2 , 2021 ( CAMP RIPLEY , Minn .) — The Biathlon is a sport that combines cross country skiing and marksmanship making it a great exercise for Soldiers . It is a centuries-old Nordic sport that has ties to Norwegian military exercises where biathletes , as they are called , ski with a . 22 caliber rifle on their backs . The rifle is not just for show . With every lap , biathletes stop at a 50-meter range to fire five rounds either while standing or laying prone . For every target that is missed , the competitor must add additional penalty loops to their race . Being able to ski fast isn ’ t the only factor contributing to how well a biathlete does .
“ Our biathletes are going to be in a high state of readiness ,” said CW4 Derek Lindberg , Minnesota National Guard Biathlete . “ They are not able to participate if they are flagged in any way .”
Lindberg also went on to say that skiing has improved his own readiness by improving his two-mile run score . He

said that skiing is a great low-impact alternative to running and way to stay active in the winter .
Along with improved run times , Lindberg also saw increasing scores in marksmanship . The key was the Biathlons emphasis on shooting fundamentals . Biathletes must focus on the fundamentals of shooting especially with high heart rates when they ski to the ranges .
“ Before Biathlon , I usually would score in the Sharpshooter range ,” said Lindberg . “ Now I normally qualify Expert with the M-44 .”
