During a recent trip to London ’ s Tate Modern , Georgia O ’ Keefe ’ s Jimson Weed / White Flower inspired me . Its framing containing square is pushed to the max by the massive white flower ’ s roundish shape . So this column is a portal to art in the round .

Artists Jérôme Fortin and Luc Courchesne are both with Pierre François Ouellette Art Contemporain gallery ( www . pfoac . com ). Fortin ’ s woven work is fascinating . Before we became more and more environmentally concerned , years ago this visionary used those awful throw-away plastic bottles as objets trouvés . While sometimes appearing eerily alien , his almost-sculptural creations ’ round rippling remind one of receding tides on sand . In their beauty , however , lie tales of entanglement . Fortin has shown in Prague , Cuba , Berlin , Tokyo , and Paris as well as Toronto and Montreal , where the Musée d ’ art contemporain presented a solo exhibit in 2007 . His work is in public and private collections .
Luc Courchesne ( RCA ) also uses a round format for his vision — photographs taken all over the planet . He created his own device to create a sense of visual immersion , thus transforming the viewer into a visitor for his images and installations . You are there as the rushing tide comes toward you in one round video . In a photo of Stanbridge Station , you stand in the middle of a field and gaze at an amazingly azure sky . The artist re-interprets the classical landscape genre with a digital délicatesse . His work is both photos and videos , which often have a sound track . His rushing water videos offer a zen-like , soothing white noise against urban jungle jumble . Professor of design at the Université de Montréal , Courchesne ’ s work is part of major collections in North America , Europe , Asia , and has been shown worldwide , including at the MoMA ( NY ) and Tokyo ’ s ICC .
At Art Mur ( www . artmur . com ), First Nations artist Nadia Myre creates a conversation about identity , using beading both politically and symbolically in her work . Working with over 230 others , Myre replaced the words of the Indian Act with white and red seed beads . Her new works , Meditations on Red , are large textured tondos . The word , from the Italian rotondo ( round ) comes from the Renaissance genre of large round paintings and sculptures . Her creations could be planets or mandalas . She chooses a few beads at a time , likening the act of selecting as “ akin to painting .” Then she scans her finished work , adding 21st-century technology to her meditative musings that recall centuries of tradition . The Sobey Art Award-winner ( 2014 ) was recently artist-in-residence at Montreal ’ s McCord Museum . She has participated in international biennials as well as group exhibitions in New York , France , and Washington D . C .
