People talk about “ downsizing ” when their children leave the nest , but Montclair residents Cathy and Conrad Fink describe their move from atraditional colonial-style home to a ’ 60s-era ranch as “ rightsizing .” And right it is , with a spectacular view of the New York City skyline that can be seen from multiple locations within and throughout the house . “ We were immediately drawn toour new home when we stood in front of it and were able to see straight through the huge front and back windows to the city ,” says Cathy .

You Can See For Miles
“ When we first moved in , the house appeared very dated , but had good bone structure ,” says Cathy .“ Ialso loved the large windows that created a strong correspondence between outdoors and indoors .” Minor renovations to the front of the house include the addition of an attractive stone façade to the right of the door , additional board and batten wainscoting on the left side , and a clever inlay of bluestone abutting the driveway to create a parking spot for unloading groceries . The living room reflects the Finks ’ chosen palette throughout the house – neutrals for the walls and flooring to accentuate more colorful furnishings . The furniture combines retro pink chairs bought from the previous owner with soft blue velvet couches purchased from Dwell Studio in NYC . Colonial chair moldings were removed to give the room a more modern streamlined look , and the fireplacewas refurbished with off-white marble . Charming wooden nesting tables from Mitchell Gold completethe tableau .
