LIST Want To Go Outside? Just like their owners, dogs tend to hang out indoors during the cold winter months. Now that warm weather beckons once more, DR. MARK MILWICKI, a veterinarian and owner of Marsh Hospital for Animals in Verona, reminds us how our pets can best enjoy being creatures of nature again. SIX SPRINGTIME TIPS FOR A HAPPY, HEALTHY DOG BUGS BEGONE Pet owners sometimes get lax about giving their dogs tick and flea medications in winter, but spring is the beginning of parasite season. Dogs should get properly vaccinated against Lyme disease, so now’s a good time to check in with your vet about what’s appropriate for your pet. OUT AND ABOUT Check to make sure your dog’s collar fits properly. A flimsy one on a big dog doesn’t give you much control, especially if your dog is very strong. NO PLACE AT THE TABLE Many dogs are fed the same amount of food year-round, but since they get less exercise during the winter, they have a tendency to gain weight. If this is true of your pet, reduce his food intake slightly during the spring, and gradually increase his exercise. A younger dog might be able to handle a surge in activity, but an older one could suffer from joint disease or a cardiac condition. BEWARE OF BRITTLE BONES Nowadays, due to the hormones that are fed to our meat sources, animal bones can be weak and brittle, and splinter easily. If you give your dog a bone, watch to make sure she isn’t strong enough to break off pieces and choke on them
