Want To Go Outside?
Just like their owners, dogs tend to hang out indoors during
the cold winter months. Now that warm weather beckons
once more, DR. MARK MILWICKI, a veterinarian and owner
of Marsh Hospital for Animals in Verona, reminds us how
our pets can best enjoy being creatures of nature again.
SIX SPRINGTIME TIPS FOR A HAPPY, HEALTHY DOG
BUGS BEGONE
Pet owners sometimes get lax about
giving their dogs tick and flea medications
in winter, but spring is the beginning of
parasite season. Dogs should get properly
vaccinated against Lyme disease, so now’s
a good time to check in with your vet
about what’s appropriate for your pet.
OUT AND ABOUT
Check to make sure your dog’s collar
fits properly. A flimsy one on a big dog
doesn’t give you much control, especially
if your dog is very strong.
NO PLACE AT THE TABLE
Many dogs are fed the same amount
of food year-round, but since they get
less exercise during the winter, they have
a tendency to gain weight. If this is true
of your pet, reduce his food intake
slightly during the spring, and gradually
increase his exercise. A younger dog
might be able to handle a surge in
activity, but an older one could suffer
from joint disease or a cardiac condition.
BEWARE OF BRITTLE BONES
Nowadays, due to the hormones that
are fed to our meat sources, animal bones
can be weak and brittle, and splinter
easily. If you give your dog a bone, watch
to make sure she isn’t strong enough to
break off pieces and choke on them
