COLLABORATIVE INNOVATION A process in which organisations or individuals work together to produce a commercially beneficial product, process or service POST MARKET SURVEILLANCE IDEN UNM NE WHY IS COLLABORATIVE INNOVATION IMPORTANT? Very few small organisations have all the skills, experience, resources, funding and knowledge to take products from concept to a commercial reality without the need to work with other groups. To commercialise most successful life science or medical device products there is generally a need for collaboration between the ABCs: A Academic groups. These groups provide expertise, resources and R&D capacity where businesses are limited in resources B Businesses who are the development and commercial entity that take ideas from concept to launch C Clinical input, representing the connection to the experts who provide the link to the patient and healthcare services Medilink is at the centre of the ABCs, helping businesses to identify partners and to provide support in directly understanding unmet needs and supporting the development process related to business case preparations, value proposition and clinical evaluation reports. Having a strong multidisciplinary team means you are more likely to demonstrate that you have the right competencies to decrease technical and commercial risk and maximise probability of successful product launch. This is particularly critical when applying for government funding above £100K. The key to any successful development and commercialisation is to provide a solution for a genuine unmet need. Organisations such as Medilink support businesses in identifying key unmet needs by using ground breaking techniques such as ethnography and lead user research. Businesses then need to identify a solution or solutions to the unmet need. This is best achieved by first understanding the competitor and technological landscape to determine what has already been achieved in this space. The unmet need is the gap between current solutions and a future desired state. This gap is where the business opportunity lies. It is important to have the right team whether that be part or full time to help identify the solution. This is generally where collaboration is required to find solution, to take the business opportunity forward and to reduce technical and commercial risk and to increase the probability of success.
