COLLABORATION IS THE KEY TO
REMOVING THE RISKS OF INNOVATION
IN THE MEDICAL SECTOR
Innovation can be a risky and expensive businessparticularly if you are an individual or a small company.
If it’s a brand new product, you need to convince yourself
and potential backers that it is going to work, there is a
market and you can make it at a price people are willing
to pay.
In the medical world, it’s often the people at the sharp end –
surgeons, clinicians and other practitioners - who come up
with the best ideas, but face the biggest challenges, turning
them into products.
Success is only possible thanks to collaboration between
practitioners, people with the capability to evaluate
and develop their ideas, manufacturers and specialist
distributors.
We’ve experienced numerous examples of this collaboration
through our Medical Advanced Manufacturing Research
Centre.
During the past year we have worked directly with surgeons
and other organisations developing products that meet
exacting medical requirements, including orthopaedic
screwdrivers that retain screws securely while they are
anchored in place, new screws to repair tendons damaged
playing sports, specialist devices for assembling new
implants and a revolutionary mobility device.
It has involved us in everything from concept design and
prototyping to evaluating and combining the features of
different solutions, finding companies with appropriate
manufacturing skills and equipment, and helping
companies avoid unnecessary additional investment by
tailoring products to be made on existing machines.
In every case, collaboration has been vital and that will
continue to be true, irrespective of whether we are working
on new products or developing new processes to improve
competitiveness.
