Renaissance Portraiture
Designed by Young & Battaglia with image
by Himitsuhana. The ornate frame is not as it
seems; in fact it’s printed onto the canvas.
Water is not enough… In this portrait by
Himitsuhana a young lady washes at the side of
a babbling brook, dressed in luxurious velvets
and taffeta, we can see this is no servant girl.
Cherubs and landscape are glimpsed in the
background. This picture is a modern twist
on the traditional pastoral portraits of the 18th
century when landed gentry were depicted
outside in their pleasure gardens and grottos.
Mirror Mirror.. This portrait by Himitsuhana
depicts a young lady in traditional dress
holding a mask, yet the mask is a perfect and
magical replica of her face. Referencing the
masked balls which were so popular in the 18th
century, Himitsuhana has created a curious
tableaux, the lady looks pensive and is dressed
in black, the mask is a metaphor for her life.
Fire is not enough… This image by
Himitsuhana shows a young dandy dressed in
his fine embroidered frock coat and feathered
cap. With a musket in one hand and a blazing
rose in the other. Does it speak of unrequited
love or a scorned declaration?
