So I was intrigued when I heard about Soft Surgery, which is performed without cutting or removing the skin, or taking out fat. It apparently has all the benefits of traditional surgery but without the risks, with no down time and no scarring - you could be in and out in your lunchtime!

Now this really sounded too good to be true. And I am always suspicious of the “lunchtime face-lift” line – it’s a horrible idea that you can pop out to have lunch and then return to the office having had any procedure. Even with Botox, I think you should have it at the end of the day or on a day off, so you can take it easy afterwards.

A friend recommended a clinic in Southend, Vie Aesthetic, so I scheduled an appointment there to see what they could do about my unsightly lines.

The clinic is headed by Dr Ioannis Liakas, a pioneer of soft surgery who has performed thousands of procedures at Southend and his other practice in Harley Street, and also in Germany.

He is a member of the British Council of Aesthetic medicine and also an honorary senior lecture at Queen Mary medical school.

The consultation with Dr Liakas was a little like going to see an artist who’s planning to paint a portrait of you. He studied every angle of my face and assured me that I looked pretty good for my age. But of course I could look better – and he said he could easily erase the lines that were bothering me.

The lines would be taken away by a devise called Plexr, a small, completely wireless small machine that forms plasma to sublimate the excess skin.

It gives out a tiny spark, similar to a minute lighting bolt that creates an electric arc and treats the problem area without spreading to other parts of the skin. It can be used on bags under the eyes, and even on the stomach. Once treated, the area would look bruised for a week or so but this could be concealed with make-up.

In some cases, a second treatment will be needed but as it’s only a fraction of the cost of traditional surgery, it’s well worth it.
