“OLDER ATHLETES ALSO HAVE TO BE MINDFUL OF ELEMENTS, SUCH AS STRESS, POOR NUTRITION AND LACK OF SLEEP, THAT MAKE THEM MORE SUSCEPTIBLE TO INJURY.” ANNE NAPPI OWNER OF BODY 4 BODY FITNESS FIGHTING BREAST CANCER In addition to being a fitness trainer and business owner, ANNE NAPPI is a two-time breast cancer survivor and mother of two (a daughter, 21, and a son, 18). “Early detection is the key to surviving breast cancer,” says Nappi. She also credits a healthy diet and exercise for helping her fight the disease. “A wholesome diet, low in sugar and processed foods, combined with daily exercise helped me to keep my body healthy and functioning properly,” she says. Nappi cautions that while going through treatment, it is important to really listen to what your body is telling you. She recommends a diet of “nutrient dense” foods, such as organic fruits and vegetables, as well as light strength-training and cardio. “Gentle exercise and movement is advised when feeling tired from the effects of chemo and radiation,” Nappi says. “Try just a short daily walk outside in the fresh air. When energy improves, then take advantage of increasing exercise time and intensity accordingly.”
