The generation of greater forces under braking and cornering highlight some deficiencies in the vehicle ’ s springing and wire wheel strength . The fitment of the optional 9 / 16 th diameter front anti-roll bar will counter the greater cornering forces potentially available from radials and much firmer MGB V8 inner wishbone bushes to replace the “ top hat ” rubbers , provide for better location of the suspension and more accurate steering . The replacement of rubber with Polyurethane for the rear shackle bushes will reduce rear end steering effects . These measures are advisable due to the less progressive nature of the transition from full adhesion to a “ breakaway ” ( lurid slide ) event . Some of us are old enough to know ( and to survive ) the effects on quickly driven cars when radial ply tyres were first fitted . They had be-

come generally available by the mid 1960 ’ s . Finally , the original equipment 48 spoke wire wheels are simply not strong enough to withstand the forces that can be generated by radial ply tyres , especially under emergency braking on dry roads . Some members , having experienced spoke breakages , wheel rim damage and distortion , have replaced them with cross laced wire wheels with 60 or 72 spokes . I recommend replacement with the 72 spoke 5 inch wide by 15 inch diameter wheels that were standard equipment on the MGC . The 165 / 80 x 15 size radial ply tyre , commonly in use , can be refitted onto this wheel rim and , if you purchase an extra rim for the spare , will still fit into the baulk head cavity in the boot .
