Meet Linda, a Muslim-American for Black Lives Matter - New Sincerity

Linda Sarsour won’t sit still, or be quiet. Unlike some common Muslim female stereotypes, she isn’t afraid to speak her mind and make sh*t happen. Yes, she’s from Brooklyn. “My faith informs my role and commitment to standing up against injustice,” she said in July. This mama of three has her finger on the pulse of the nation. Her secret ingredient: she looks for similarities among us, not differences. That’s what makes us stronger and sexier. After Michael Brown’s passing in Ferguson, she founded ‘Muslims for Ferguson’, a group that offers solidarity with ‪#‪BlackLivesMatter‪, and also notices the overlap in struggles of the Muslim and Black experience in the US (like dealing with excessive stop-and-frisks). It seems that pilgrimages can take many forms, too. Last year, Sarsour helped organize ‪#‪March2Justice‪, a 250-mile walk from New York to DC where people of all stripes and colors brought awareness to racial profiling and demanded action from the government. Ok, sure, we could all dust off our neglected sneakers for that. But really, this is the tip of the iceberg. Linda has her irons in many fires and continues to use her charisma for social good. She’s an American, a Muslim, and a force to be reckoned with. Follow
