Royals Dominate in Delisle
Janine Hayward, Martensville Messenger
The MHS Royals came out of the gate strong this season
as they posted a 35-21 win over the Delisle Rebels in their first
game September 9. This is history in the making as they have never
defeated the Rebels on their home turf up until Friday. It was the
annual ‘Friday Night Lights’ as Delisle hosted their night game with
the Royals. The Royals had control for most of the game as they
went into the half with a 21-14 lead. The team had to face their first
opponents without the guidance of coach Lyle Evanisky as he was
coaching his Senior Men’s Flag Team at Worlds in Miami, Florida.
He ran the team’s training camp for the 2 weeks previous getting the
players in shape for this first game.
Jack Kobussen took over the reins as head coach for the
first game as both the offense and the defense played with confidence
and got the job done. All the coaches were proud of the team’s effort.
“Keegan Lussier was running down hill all night and they (Rebels)
were having a hard time stopping him,” commented Kobussen. He
was impressed with the O-line who gave quarterback Ethan Moran
time to throw. Moran was on target all night and completed passes to
four different receivers. Kyle Edmison and Connor McKay had some
clutch receptions in the fourth quarter. The defense played really well
getting multiple sacks, with players like Nykola Dovgyy disrupting
the Rebel offense all night. “Many of the players had to play both
sides of the ball and it was a real team effort,” commented Kobussen.
“Logan Heck pulled us out of a hole multiple times with long punt
returns and it was fitting that he intercepted the ball to end the game.”
Offensive coordinator Reid
Lambden was extremely proud of all of
the guys. The defense was able to force
turnovers while the offense controlled the
ball which was crucial for their success.
The offensive line controlled the ball from
start to finish. “Friday was just a stepping
stone in what should be an exciting year
for our team,” commented Lambden.
“We’re looking forward to carrying this
momentum from this win into next week.”
The Royals host their rivals, the Warman
Wolverines, on Friday, September 16.

The Royals coaching staff
for the 2016 season consists of head
coach Lyle Evanisky, offensive coaches;
Reid Lambden, Jack Kobussen, Aaron
Osczevski, defensive coaches; Shane
Garner, Shayne Hayward, and Vince Riley.
The team would also like to thank
the community again for their support
of their annual bottle drive. They raised
$4716 to put towards team operations.
