Another Successful Martensville A&W Race Weekend
109 Centennial Dr. North, Martensville
Tyler Janzen, Martensville Messenger
Saturday, September 10th was the annual
Martensville A&W Show and Shine in preparation for the
Martensville A&W Valley Street Stock 100 invitational
at the Wyant Group Raceway in Saskatoon that evening.
The Show and Shine started out with many of the racers
displaying their cars around the Martensville A&W where
they had breakfast and were able to converse with the
multiple fans. By noon the race cars were gone and the
classics and tuners were lined up along Centennial Drive.
Over 150 cars participated in the Show and Shine, breaking
the record set last year. The Show and Shine is a staple in
Martensville and every year hundreds of people show up to
look at the beautiful cars that owners have spent countless
hours on making them sparkle, shine, go really fast, and
basically look as if they are fresh off the showroom floor
(until you look under the hood anyway). It was a gorgeous
day to walk down Centennial Drive as the sun was
beaming, which made the cars look that much prettier. At
around three o’clock it was time to get the cars home and
all that was left behind was the sweet smell of gasoline and
the occasional tire mark on the road. Once all the cars were
tucked away safely, it was time to head to the Wyant Group
Raceway for the longest race of the season, 100 laps. There
were a few heat races before the main event. The top four
qualifying times would face off in the trophy dash which
was won by car #81 driven by Curtis Houben. The main
event was a 100 lap race and since there is no true pits at
the raceway the drivers would stop after 50 laps to fuel up.
It was at this point that Houben and his Camaro were in the
lead. He would continue to lead when the weather changed
and the caution flag came out. After a brief delay of about
two minutes the track was deemed dry enough to race and
Houben continued to lead for about 9 laps. It was then the
skies really opened up and the race could not go on.
However, since the racers had completed over
50% of their laps, the race was called as complete with 24
laps to go. Curtis Houben (#81) took first place followed
closely by Kevin McIaggen (#63) in second and Mike Rea
(#18) in third place. Once again, the Martensville A&W
Valley Street Stock 100 did not disappoint, and despite the
weather, race fans left satisfied.
The Martensville & District Lions Club were
responsible for gathering sponsors for the event, and would
like to thank all of the sponsors that signed up for the
Martensville A&W Valley Street Stock 100. “This will be
an ongoing event with the Lions Club providing sponsors.
Without them, this event wouldn’t be as much of a success.
We would love to have sponsors on board for next year. ”
