Lifted Restrictions Means Potential for More Doctors in Bedroom Communities Lacie Munholland , Martensville Messenger

Previous restrictions on doctors practicing in bedroom communities have been lifted . The Martensville Messenger spoke to Dr . Allison Adamus of Collective Health and Wellness in Martensville regarding the changes .
“ Part of our problem was that a good number of graduating residents had signed return for service agreements that had to be served in rural communities . There were specific restrictions against bedroom communities , such as Martensville . Contracts that were signed in July with new residents state that residents can serve their return for service agreements in any community with a demonstrated need ,” commented Dr . Adamus .
Dr . Adamus has been active in lobbying the Ministry of Health into reviewing and changing the restrictions around new doctors serving their return to service agreements in bedroom communities . In a previous interview about the shortage of physicians in Martensville and surrounding communities , Dr . Adamus commented : “ If the Ministry of Health would consider the need of the community rather simply its geographical location , that would be a great start to getting more physicians here in Martensville . It ' s also tough to compete with other rural communities in terms of government incentive programs and bonuses ( from which we are excluded ), especially since many of those communities are not far from ours . Other allied health services such as mental health , laboratory , and possibly X-ray services would also help to draw physicians into the community .”
While the lifting of these restrictions is necessary , Martensville and similar communities most likely will not see a dramatic change for at least two years , as the doctors that signed new contracts still have to finish their residency . When that time comes , Dr . Adamus is excited to welcome as many physicians as Martensville has need for .
That begs the question : how many physicians does Martensville actually need ? While Dr . Adamus and the team at Martensville Collective Health and Wellness are excited to welcome two , full time physicians to their team : Dr . Amanda Walker and Dr . Cheryl Mitchell , the community need requires more full time physicians . Dr . Adamus sees on average 30 patients a day . The number of patients in the clinic varies depending on the day – whether it is walk-in hours , or individuals have appointments booked . Dr . Adamus believes that Martensville could keep up to 10 physicians busy based on a waitlist number of around 1,200 .
Martensville Collective Health and Wellness is happy to provide walk-in hours to the public . Walk-in hours are : Tuesday , Wednesday and Thursday from 5:00pm- 8:30pm , as well as Fridays from 8:40am-2:00pm .
