Wednesday, October 26, 2016 is Election Day for the 2016 municipal election. The City of Martensville has stated on their website: “Voting is a fundamental right of democracy, and you are encouraged to participate in civic elections. Civic Government is involved in almost every aspect of our daily lives. When you vote, you are selecting the representatives who will make the laws and policies that will determine how our city functions and how all of us live together.” With the election fast approaching, there are various important dates and deadlines to remember in regard to the 2016 municipal election. Nominations open September 6, 2016 at 9:00am, and close September 21, 2016 at 4:00pm. The final date for the withdrawal of candidates is September 22, 2016 at 4:00pm.Advance polls are October 15 and October 22, 2016, open from 2:00pm-6:00pm. Election Day is October 26, 2016 from 8:00am-8:00pm.New Council is sworn in November 1, 2016. The nomination form allows one to be nominated for mayor, or councilor. Additionally, the form requires the signatures of five other individuals, as well as a street address. The City of Martensville’s website also has resources available regarding being a candidate. The candidate guide includes important information such as: becoming an elected official, responsibilities, code of conduct, qualifications, etc. This guide can also be found at the City of Martensville’s website. There is important information regarding being a registered voter as well. You can vote in City of Martensville municipal elections if, on the day of the election, you are: a Canadian citizen, at least 18 years old, a resident of the City of Martensville for at least three consecutive months immediately preceding the day of the election, and a resident of the Province of Saskatchewan for at least six consecutive months immediately preceding the day of the election. All those choosing to vote must provide identification to be able to vote. There are three options for voter identification: Business & Professional 1) One original piece of identification that includes your photo, name and address. The identification must be issued by a federal, provincial, or municipal government, such as a Saskatchewan Driver’s License; 2) Two original pieces of information, both of which must contain your name and at least one that contains your address. Examples of acceptable identification options include a utility bill issued to you within the last six months, and a credit card statement; 3) If you do not possess any form of acceptable identification you may have another voter vouch, or provide assurance of your identity and address, for you.
