Throughout the day, the volunteer firefighters focused on ground operations, which consisted of size up, fire attack, search and rescue, rapid intervention, door control, flow paths and vent enter searches. Members also trained in the flashover chamber, which helps firefighters learn to identify changing conditions inside of a building by reading smoke, different phases of fire, identifying rollover and how they can reduce the chances of flashover using different nozzle techniques. A flashover is the sudden involvement of a room or an area in flames from floor to ceiling caused by thermal radiation feedback, which is the energy of the fire being radiated back to the contents of the room from the walls, floor and ceiling. This will cause all contents within a room to reach their auto ignition temperature, causing them to suddenly, and simultaneously ignite. Flashover typically occurs at 500 °C (932 °F) or 590 °C (1,100 °F) for ordinary combustibles. During the training session, Tracy Wilson-Gerwing, City of Martensville EMO Coordinator was onsite training with the firefighter accountability system. “I believe it was a very successful training day and I want to thank everyone that came out and gave up their Saturday,” MFD Fire Chief Kurtis Dyck stated. The Martensville Fire Department will be hosting their annual Open House on October 12th from 5pm- 7pm at the fire hall for Fire Prevention Week. The Open House will feature a BBQ, informational displays and a demonstration featuring the MFD cutting a car apart using the Jaws of Life. “It is an opportunity for us to get our message across to everyone, but it is also for them to come and see what we do,” Dyck added. Be sure to stop by the MFD Open House to learn more about the brave men and women that keep our community safe. RIGHT: MFD hold training session on Saturday at their training grounds.
