We hold this event twice throughout the school year, and this is our fourth year. Our families are invited to bring a picnic lunch to enjoy while they read. It is wonderful to see so many parents, grandparents, aunties and uncles, and preschool age siblings participating in this reading celebration. At Prairie View School, we work hard to create and maintain a culture of literacy and this is just one event that we do to encourage reading. Our goal is for students to be engaged in their reading, to see and hear others reading, and to have meaningful conversations about what they are learning. We look forward to our Spring Family Literacy Time! Venture Heights Hosts Historical Fencing Demo ABOVE & BELOW: Students and their families participated in Family Literacy Time at Prairie View School in Dalmeny. Venture Heights hosted an interactive fencing demonstration, done by the Saskatoon Historical Fencing Society (SHFS), in their gym Thursday, October 20th from 4:30pm-5:30pm. Members of the SHFS brought their equipment and provided students with an opportunity to learn basic strike drills and learn what it is like to be a “real Knight.” This year, Venture Heights is once again participating with “One Book, One School, One Community” and this year’s theme is “Knights”. “Right now our theme and school motto revolve around being a Knight. We are the Venture Heights Knights. We are talking about chivalry and what it takes to be a knight,” Allysa Brewster, a teacher at VHS explained. It was this theme that inspired Brewster to contact the SHFS, and requested that the demonstration be done during conferences, as “One Book, One School, One Community” concludes. “We have read books across the entire school about knights and thought this would be the perfect time to have them come in,” Brewster added. Many of the young Venture Heights students who saw the demonstration headed straight for the Fencers. They were given an opportunity to hold the dull swords and try out a few stances and even a parlay. “We look at a lot of the old manuals from anywhere between 1300 to about 1700 at German, Italian a little bit of Bolognese techniques and we try to re-create in some ways what they did. There are some limitations, some techniques that require sharp blades, but we’re not quite crazy enough to use those! We have around seven to eight regular members and our members are mostly university students,” Corey Schultz from the SHFS, said. The society is trying to spread the word about what they are doing and interest more participants. For more information about the SHFS, visit them on Facebook under ‘Saskatoon H i s t o r i c a l Fencing’. Want to be an Air Cadet?
