‘ Good Grief ’, That is One Talented Cast !

Ciara O ’ Reilly , Martensville Messenger
Martensville High School ’ s choir put together two spectacular productions of “ You ’ re a Good Man , Charlie Brown ” this past November 18th and 19th . I had the privilege of being amongst the audience on Saturday ’ s performance for the viewing of the comical musical . The cast did a phenomenal job in portraying their characters from Charles . M . Schulz ’ s ‘ peanut gang ’ accurately and humorously . These productions had it all , from singing and acting to dancing with comedians aplenty . Beck , musical director , could not have picked out better suited actors for the characters at hand . The amphitheatre was full to the brim on both occasions . All in all , this occasion allowed for an evening full of good humour , good laughs , and feelgood vibes all around .
The musical opened with Charlie Brown ( Cole Zacharias ) on centre stage , and surrounding characters included Schroeder ( Emma Ens ), Lucy van Pelt ( Cassidy Funk ), Snoopy ( Noah Fehr ), Sally Brown ( Winslorbless Lumapas ) and Linus van Pelt ( Kate Jalbert ). Charlie Brown , an unconfident six year old stood amongst his friends in the opening act as they each told Charlie their opinions of him . It is here we learn that Brown lacks in many qualities such as confidence , courage , sport skills , school smarts and more . The first scene closes with everyone calling him a " good man ". Charlie Brown is happy and hopeful as usual , but he nevertheless wonders if he really is what they say . He decided to find out how he can really become a good person . Poor Charlie Brown develops a crush on a Cute Red-Haired girl as he sits alone for lunch one day . What Brown lacks in courage he makes up for in awkwardness as he ended up with his brown paper lunch bag over his head in fear that the Cute Red-Haired Girl was looking at him . ‘ Good grief ’, Charlie Brown . Cassidy Funk did an excellent job in portraying Lucy ’ s infatuation with Schroeder ( Emma Ens ) on stage . Schroeder remained indifferent towards Lucy as she confessed her love over the playing of his piano . In fact , Schroeder merely continued to play . Snoopy ( Noah Fehr ) was presented well as Charlie Brown ’ s sassy dog . Snoopy excelled in hilarity , sassiness and vivaciousness throughout the performance . Kate Jalpert ( Linus ) showed off her skill in dance as she cartwheeled and leaped across the stage during her performance “ my blanket and me ”. Triggered by the teasing ’ s of Lucy and Sally , Linus began to daydream of a blanket fantasy where everyone gets to relax with their blankets . We are then introduced to Charlie Brown ’ s little sister , Sally ( Winslorbless Lumapas ). Sally is a lively and bold little girl . During the first act Sally complains engrossingly about the “ C ” she received in school for her rather pathetic coat hanger model . What little Sally lacked in size ( and school marks ), she certainly made up for in song . The voice of Lumapas was sensational .
Later on during this act Charlie Brown appears , trying to get his unusually stubborn kite to soar in the air . Eventually , he succeeds in doing this , and he enjoys a few minutes of triumph before the kite gets brought down by a tree , just his luck . After this trauma , Charlie Brown tries to find the right way to give the Cute Red-Headed Girl her Valentine ' s Day card , but he ends up saying " Merry Christmas ", making a fool out of himself . It was no surprise that Brown was going to butcher his Valentine ’ s Day attempts . He then goes to see Lucy , who is at her psychiatrist booth . He tells her all the things he thinks of himself . Lucy then clears it up by saying that Charlie Brown is unique the way he is .
Throughout the performance , the audience was supplied with many good laughs , and more so we had the opportunity to view the talent at which this MHS choir withholds . Towards the end of the performance , character Charlie Brown becomes upset for he failed to discover what it is to be a “ good man ”. He then finds that the Cute Red-Haired Girl dropped her pencil and what ’ s more ? He found bite marks all over it . Charlie then came to the conclusion that “ she ’ s HUMAN !” After discovering this flaw , Charlie Brown thus decided that the day wasn ’ t such a bad day after all . Charlie Brown and his friends then went on to talk about the things that make them happy . He realized that being a " good man " means trying your best and making the most out of the things you have been given in life .
As the cast gave their final bows to the applauding crowd , many members became emotional as the show
reached its final screening . It was apparent that this talented group of individuals had become very close due

to the amount of time and effort that had been exerted by each of them in order to make this musical a success . The hardworking cast closed the evening with the recognition of their much loved musical director , Mrs . Beck . Beck was beckoned to the stage and presented with a beautiful bouquet of flowers with big thanks from the choir members who thoroughly enjoyed their time together . Beck stated that , “ It was no work and all fun ”. Congratulations to everyone involved with this musical ; MHS you did a phenomenal job !
