We have considered allowing applicants to send in performance videos as audition tapes however, there is a great deal of insight and value that can be taken from a live audition,” Rathgeber explains, “Whether they accompany themselves or use music tracks, the live performance before the judges not only prepares them for the final round but also gives an example of how comfortable they are performing publicly which contributes to the entire experience.” The panel of judges chosen for Saturday’s finals consisted of Multi SCMA Award winners, Samara Yung and Hal Schrenk, as well as Past President for the Saskatchewan Country Music Association, Murray Yung, as well as local musicians and vocalists Ida Rose Wilde, and Melanie Pain. CMAS Member, Shantaia Poulin kicked off the afternoon of performances with her strong instrumental and vocal talent then encouraged the contestants by saying “never give up on your passion and talent. Regardless how things end for you today, you are all winners”. With five hours of performances, the judges took a few moments for deliberation before announcing the top three winners. The third place was awarded to 18 year old Shayna Scherbey of Ituna, SK with Debden’s 13 year old Layton Ferster claiming second place. Top honors were awarded to Justine Sletten from the Swift Current Area. “It was a great afternoon with some very talented young people - it was a tough race,” commented Hal Schrenk. “Our purpose for putting on an event such as this is to give young people working toward a music career the opportunity to perform in front of a large audience and give them stage experience. We also want them to have the opportunity to gain feedback from our judges, many of whom have spent their early years doing the very same competitions.” While it’s too early to say if next year’s finals will return to Dalmeny it is confirmed that the competition will be taking place once again. Auditions will take place later this fall.
