The 2016 NHL Entry Draft was held on Friday June 24th with the Toronto Maple Leafs holding the first overall pick . With their prized choice they selected forward Auston Matthews of Scottsdale , Arizona . Things are looking good for the Leafs as Matthews is the first American-born player to be drafted first overall since the Blackhawks selected Patrick Kane in 2007 and everyone knows what a franchise player he has turned out to be . Another fact that looks promising for the Leafs is that the last time they had the number one pick they chose Wendel Clark , another franchise player . Matthews , who was playing for Zurich in the National League A in Switzerland ’ s top professional league , had 24 goals and 22 assists in

Shea Weber Jim Rutherford just 36 games last season was awarded the league MVP and the Rising Star Award . Things may be on the rise next season for the Leafs . With the second overall pick the Winnipeg Jets selected Patrik Laine who was voted as tournament All-Star in the 2016 World Juniors and was also named tournament MVP at the 2016 World Championship playing for the Finns . The Columbus Blue Jackets shocked the NHL by passing on another young Finnish star , Jesse Puljujarvi , and selecting Canadian Pierre-Luc Dubios . The Edmonton Oilers were happy to pick up Puljujarvi fourth overall as he will most likely spend the rest of his career playing on the right wing alongside last years first overall choice Connor McDavid . This draft was very strong for the country Finland as they had three players in the top five as Vancouver selected Olli Juolevi fifth overall . The Calgary Flames selected tough guy Matthew Tkachuk ( son of long time NHLer Keith Tkachuk ). The Flames were not done there as they were determined to come out of the draft with a goalie . The flames traded away one of there second round picks and a conditional third rounder in 2018 to St . Louis for veteran goaltender Brian Elliot .
