Martensville ’ s Field of Dreams

Janine Hayward , Martensville Messenger
It all seemed like a dream early last week when MHS principal Brad Nichol and his staff were talking about building the new field in front of the school . A few teachers had sat around talking and discussed how they were almost out of steam , being it was the end of the school year but they wanted the use of the field in the fall . They dug in their heels and with the donation and generosity of many businesses and local community members , they decided to go full steam and finish all 175,000 feet of green space in 3 days . It was like a dream come true .
“ The whole experience was overwhelming in a positive way ,” commented Nichol . On Monday it seemed like such a huge task to undertake . “ With a little faith and a lot of hard work , it all came together ”. The whole process started weeks ago when Brad Nichol approached community member and owner of Venture Construction , Lyle Wilson to discuss what it would take to build this field . Wilson was a huge help and contributor to the project . The whole thing got rolling when Corney Janzen and Lyle Wilson started bringing in semis full of fill which amounted to 7000 yards . There were many hours spent leveling and crowning the field before anything else could develop . KH Developments donated 2500 yards of topsoil after the crowning was done . Trying to stay local , Nichol contacted Aaron Jalbert about irrigation . Jalbert installed the sprinklers and donated his time to get the irrigation system working . Consolidated Turf donated all the supplies at half the cost . The City of Martensville was very helpful in hooking up the new system to their pond irrigation system .
Next on the agenda was laying the thousands of yards of turf . This was a huge undertaking but many hands came to lighten the burden . Matt from KOS Excavating and Turner Ashphalt services donated a brand new bobcat to use as well as Corney Janzen fueled the Bobcats and got them ready every day . On Monday June 27 at 9:00 am the turf was delivered and the project was started . For 3 days from 9:00am to 9:00 pm there were many volunteers that helped get this project completed keeping in mind that if it was not done in these 3 days , they would not have use of it in the fall .
“ They were grueling days but we pulled it out ,” commented Nichol . “ It was a great way to end the school year and we ’ re proud of what we did .” This was a school initiative that could not have been without such generosity from businesses and the community . There were teachers , students , football players , alumni , SCC members , and even our Mayor Kent Muench who all lent a hand to the new field . Nichol felt it was time the school did its part to alleviate the pressure on the City ’ s green space . “ It ’ s time we had a school field and it ’ s great the school could do it ’ s part ”, commented Nichol . “ The community support was overwhelming and it was such a beautiful project to be a part of .” Nichol knows there is more work and people to thank come fall but thanks to all of the generosity of everyone we have the “ Field of Dreams .”
