Pokémon go Causes safety Concerns

Lacie Munholland , Martensville Messenger As Pokémon Go becomes increasingly popular , it ’ s important to be mindful of safety while playing . Pokémon Go is unique as it allows players to walk around outside while playing , a relatively new concept when it comes to games , as most games require the player to remain stationary and connected to their gaming console . The game uses a player ’ s smartphone camera and geo-location technology to overlay virtual Pokémon characters and scenery in your own neighbourhood . Players then have to ‘ capture ’ these creatures , eventually being able to use them to battle .
Pokémon Go has people polarized . Some people find Pokémon Go appealing due to the nostalgia they feel . For those who grew up watching Pokémon , and trading the cards , Pokémon Go brings back memories , and allows players to interact in a really fun way . Others think the game is juvenile and are not happy about players disrespecting property .
As the Pokémon Go craze continues over the summer , news stories have flooded in from around the world about people in car accidents , breaking ankles , and falling in holes – just to name a few . Those who play the game , along with those who don ’ t , are worried about ‘ play etiquette ,’ or being respectful of people and property while playing . If you play , be aware of not trespassing and take the time to look up and around to see where you ’ re walking .
Kindersley RCMP have expressed their opinion on Pokémon Go in a Facebook post : “ We love Pokémon Go just as much as you and if you feel the need to run around playing it this summer , that ’ s cool , just be smart about it . Be aware of your surroundings , this also includes looking both ways before crossing the street , respecting private property at all times and not playing the game while driving ," stated the post .
Warman Fire Rescue has also shared a post on their Facebook page regarding Pokémon Go : “ This may seem ridiculous to some , but it ' s a legitimate safety issue ! Pokémon go is all the rage right now with kids in our City and pretty much every city and town out there . Kids can look through their phone and see virtual Pokémon in the real world , and they walk around in real time trying to " catch " them . The problem is they watch only their phone and not for safety concerns around them . Please talk to your kids about safety , we have seen two kids walk right into traffic playing this game , and the RCMP have written tickets for teenagers driving around playing while driving . We really don ' t want a car pedestrian accident because of this . Have the talk and take care !”
Martensville RCMP have commented on Pokémon Go stating : “ For those playing , especially younger kids : remember safety and respect people ’ s personal property . Don ’ t walk into traffic , remember to look both ways when crossing the street , and remember ‘ stranger danger ’ – don ’ t trust everyone just because they say they ’ re playing the game . It ’ s also very easy to lose track of time and each other when playing , so try to play in pairs or groups . This way someone can be watching your surroundings and what is going on . It ’ s also a good idea to wear high visibility clothing , especially as it gets darker . A tip for parents : get your kids to check in from time to time , as it ’ s easier to lose track of time when playing .”
