The World Juniors is just as much a staple around the holidays as wrapping presents . Team Canada is looking to better its 6th place finish in last year ’ s juniors . The Red and White started off the tournament with big wins against Russia , Slovakia and Latvia . The USA did the same and it came down to New Year ’ s Eve to see who would finish first in the pool . The Canadians got into penalty trouble early and gave up two on the power play to the US . Canada managed to score on a 5 on 3 power play to cut the lead in half but 5 minutes later the states regained a two goal lead and would hang on to win it 3-1 . Canada then moved on to play the Czech Republic who they had beaten in the pre-tournament 5-0 . Well this was a totally different game . Canada gave up the first goal and was down 1-0 after the first period . The Red and White tallied two quick goals to gain the league but just one minute later the Czechs tied it at 2 . Late in the second Canadian Defenceman Thomas Chabot scored to give his team the lead . Canada added a quick one in the third that was answered by the Czechs two minutes later . Canada added one more to seal the deal with a 5-3 victory . The Canadians now move on to the semi-finals to play the undefeated team Sweden . History is on Canada ’ s side as they haven ’ t lost to the Swede ’ s in the semi-finals ever . The other quarter-final games saw Russia beating Denmark 4-0 to move on to play the United States who had a tough win against team Switzerland .

One of the NHL ’ s longest active win streaks had to come to an end on New Year ’ s Eve . The Minnesota Wild were riding a 12 game win streak when they faced the Columbus Blue Jackets who had not lost in 14 straight . When the dust had settled , it was the Blue Jackets who kept their streak alive and improved it to 15 games with a 4-1 win . The longest win streak in NHL history is held by the Pittsburgh Penguins in 1992 when they won 17 consecutive games . The NHL took things outside in the new year with a pair of outdoor games including the Toronto Maple Leafs and Detroit Red Wings celebrating their Centennial season at BMO field in Toronto . The Leafs blew a 4-1 lead as the Wings pushed for overtime where Toronto would come out with the 5-4 win on New Year ’ s Day . On Monday the Chicago Blackhawks headed to Busch Stadium in St . Louis to take on the Blues . Chicago scored the fastest goal ever in an outdoor game just one minute and two seconds into the game . That is all the Hawks could manage as the Blues stormed out in the second and made the final score 4-1 .

The NFL playoffs are finalized as the last week of the regular season came to an end on Sunday . The wild card round of playoffs starts Saturday with Oakland taking on Houston and Detroit facing Seattle . Then Sunday has the Miami Dolphins heading to Pittsburgh to take on the Steelers . Atlanta , New England , Kansas City , and the Dallas Cowboys all have bye weeks and will wait to know their opponent .
