Prairie Women on Snowmobiles Prepare to Embark on 17th Ride

Shanine Sealey , Martensville Messenger
After the recent cold blast , many of us are feeling as though we are completely done with winter and ready for the snow to disappear . There is however a group of women in the province that are gearing up for the winter adventure of a lifetime . This incredible group is known as the Prairie Women on Snowmobiles ( PWOS ) and they are preparing for their seventeenth ride to raise money for breast cancer research .
PWOS was initially formed in 2001 when two friends , one a breast cancer survivor , came up with the idea to ride their snowmobiles across the province and raise money for breast cancer research . “ It soon evolved into the organization that we have today , raising money for the Canadian Cancer Society and for equipment for the Saskatchewan Cancer Society ,” Heather Mohr , a 2017 PWOS rider from Clavet , explained . The ride was originally an eight day ride ; however , has since changed to a six day ride to make it easier for riders to commit to the time .
Mohr , who lost her great grandmother to breast cancer , was honoured to be chosen again for a second ride with PWOS . “ We need to work hard to find a cure for all cancers , including breast cancer . “ The promotion of safe snowmobiling , a sport very dear to my heart , is an awesome way for me to be able to spread the word and do my part to help find a cure . I will be riding again in memory of my great grandmother , as well as for ‘ my girls ’, the fabulous ladies in my life who have fought and will continue their lifelong journey of health and happiness ,” Mohr explained . Each year , ten core riders , consisting of women from around Saskatchewan , embark on their snowmobile journey and stop in various communities along their route , visiting a total of 25 locations . The women travel a total of 1,400 kilometres and are joined by four executive members and a pit crew of three men . The ride will begin on January 29th in Hudson Bay and will end on February 3rd in Star City . Throughout each day , the riders stop for various breaks for coffee in different communities before ending up in their overnight community . In each community , the riders speak to breast cancer survivors and share their stories with one another . “ It can be quite emotional , but it is an incredible support system . We are all there for one another ,” Mohr added .
Money raised is just one part of the journey . Each year , the PWOS gain more exposure , which helps to spread their message of cancer awareness , early detection and research .
On Wednesday , February 1st , the PWOS will be swinging by Martensville and while here , the Martensville & District Kinsmen Club , along with the Saskatoon Snowmobile Club will be hosting a roast beef and chicken dinner at the Adobe Inn . Tickets are $ 30 and are available for purchase at the Canalta Hotel in Martensville or Proline Motorsports in Saskatoon . ( More details can be found on the PWOS poster located on page 9 of this issue ). The warm stops are a welcome sight for the riders after a day of riding . “ We get spoiled rotten on this trip . We are so excited to stop in all of the communities and meet so many
people . The suffering on our cold sleds doesn ’ t even begin to match the suffering of those with breast cancer ,” Mohr added . At their stops , the PWOS hold pin ceremonies where they present breast cancer survivors with a special PWOS logo pin . “ The only way that you can get a pin is if you are one of the core riders or if you are a survivor . It is really cool seeing someone wearing 16 pins on their chest for every time they have come to see us .”
Throughout the past 16 missions , PWOS has raised an amazing $ 2.3 million for cancer research . To make a donation , you can visit www . prairiewomen . ca , contact their head office at ( 306 ) 594-7403 , contact any team member , or make a donation at any of their stops along the way . If you are interested in applying to become a rider , application forms are available on their website . “ We would like to give a heartfelt thank you for welcoming us into the community once again . The support has been phenomenal not just from Martensville , but from surrounding communities as well . It is so nice to feel so welcome and they worked so hard to support this cause for the past 17 years . We are so grateful that we have such special people around ,” Mohr stated .
