The 2017 World Juniors all came down to one game on a Thursday night . Canada against the United States , what more could you ask for in a championship game ? The Canadians jumped out to a 2-0 lead after the first period but the Americans answered in the second to have it tied going into the third . Once again team Canada got a two goal lead and once again the United States answered back . Just 39 seconds after the Canadians made it 4-2 , the U . S . made it 4-3 , then less than two minutes after that the Americans scored again to tie it at 4-4 . That ’ s how the score would stay for the remainder of the third and the Gold Medal Game was going to overtime . The Championship overtime format is a 20 minute 5-on-5 period of sudden death . The chances for Canada were almost non-stop for the first half of the extra period . During the late stages the United States started to get their second wind and the pace of the game stepped up to a point I had never seen in a Junior game . It was end to end action for the rest of the overtime period but neither team could score . Canada outshot the states 17-9 in overtime and 48-36 in the game but now it was going to a shootout . American Troy Terry scored his fourth shootout goal of the tournament after scoring three against the Russians in the Semi-final . Canadian Nicolas Roy was poke checked by American goaltender Tyler Parsons and the United States are World Junior Champions and the Canadians had to settle for silver . The Bronze medal game also needed extra time as the Russians defeated the Swedes to take home the medal . Russia ’ s Kirill Kaprisov had a tournament leading nine goals and was named top forward . Sweden ’ s Felix Sandstrom was named top goaltender . Canada ’ s Thomas Chabot was named top defenceman and tournament MVP . The workhorse defenceman is the first defenceman in world junior history to be given MVP . He had four goals and a point in every game he played . Chabot played an astounding 43 minutes in the Gold Medal game .
The first week of the NFL playoffs are in the books and what a great weekend it was . Wild card weekend kicked off with the Houston Texans beating the Oakland Raiders by a score of 27-14 . The second game on Saturday saw the Seattle Seahawks crush the Detroit Lions 26-6 . On Sunday the Pittsburgh Steelers defeated the Miami Dolphins 30-12 and the Green Bay Packers handled the New York Jets and beat them by a score of 38-13 . In the Divisional round this weekend Saturday has Seattle taking on the Atlanta Falcons and Houston heads to New England to play the Patriots . The Sunday games include Pittsburgh battling with the Kansas City Chiefs and Green Bay against the Dallas Cowboys .
The second longest win streak in NHL history came to an end this week . The Columbus Blue Jackets were taken down a notch when the Washington Capitals handed them their first loss in 16 games . The Jackets couldn ’ t solve Braden Holtby and lost 5-0 on Thursday . The Jackets are still first in the league with a 28-7-4 record . As for the Canadian team , four of the seven are sitting in a playoff spot as of Monday .
