Casey Plays Spoiler at Tankard

Saskatoon ’ s Steve Laycock and his rink were looking for their fourth provincial championship as they opened the tournament with a commanding 9-3 win over Lashburn ’ s Ryan Armstrong in the opening draw at Tisdale on Wednesday , February 1 . Adam Casey and his rink out of Regina had other plans , as they played spoiler for the reigning champions . A total of 16 teams were competing for the right to represent Saskatchewan at the Tim Hortons Brier Canadian men ’ s curling championship in St . John ’ s , N . L ., from March 4 to 12 . The top four teams advanced to the Page playoff system this weekend .
Adam Casey and Steve Laycock were battling for the A event final . They were all tied up in the 10th when Laycock was forced to draw to the button in an extra end to defeat Casey to take first place . The 1 versus 2 Playoff game saw Casey and Laycock match up again . Laycock took the early lead over three ends but Casey showed off his big play making with a double of his own in the fourth . Casey would later pick up a 3 ender and a steal in 9 taking the 1vs2 game over Laycock by a score of 8-5 . Casey earned a free ride to the final as he waited for the semifinal that saw Laycock facing Bruce Korte on Sunday morning . Korte defeated Hartung 5-3 in the 3vs4 game to get to the semi against Laycock .
The semifinal action saw some great playmaking by both teams with Laycock putting lots of rocks in play . Korte tied things up at 6 in the 10th forcing Laycock into extra ends . He scored his one to get the 7-6 win and a berth to the provincial final . This would be the third meeting between Casey and Laycock . Adam Casey took the wind out of team Laycock when they scored a 3 ender right off the bat . They would later score 3 consecutive points in the third and fourth as well . Team Casey and his rink of Catlin Schneider , Shaun Meachem , Dustin Kidby , and coach Jamie Schneider defeated threetime defending champion Steve Laycock 11-3 and will represent Saskatchewan in St . Johns on March 4-12 .
ABOVE & RIGHT : Venture Heights School hosted a 5 team mini-tournament at the MAP February 3 . All teams participating got to play four games and everyone watching could see the improvement as the tourney went on . Great job players and coaches !
