Rush Squeak Out Another Win

Janine Hayward , Martensville Messenger
It was fan appreciation night on Saturday as the Rush played host to Colorado with over 15,000 in attendance once again . There were giveaways and one lucky fan went home with a brand new car , as part of the organization ’ s appreciation .
Colorado was a formidable opponent as Mammoth netminder Dillon Ward turned away 45 shots of 53 that he had to face by the Rush . They squeaked by the Mammoth 8-7 to bring home their 5th consecutive win . The Rush who are 5-2 now have a game and a half lead over Colorado who are 4-4 in the NLL ’ s West Division . It was not easy to find the net but the Rush opened scoring finally half way through the first with 3 goals by McIntosh , Corbeil and Matthews . They added another in the second with a power play goal by the rookie Ryan Keenan to put them up 4-0 . The Mammoth woke up and scored a series of 4 quick goals to tie the game at the half .
The teams exchanged goals in the third to keep it a 5-5 tie . With only 35 seconds into the fourth the Mammoth took the 6-5 lead but shortly after John Lafontaine found Kurtis Knight who tied things back at six a piece . McIntosh capitalized on a delayed penalty and took the lead 7-6 . The Rush took a late penalty and with only 13 seconds left the Mammoth pulled their goalie but Jeff Cornwall found the empty net which proved to be crucial as the Mammoth got a late shot by Goaltender Aaron Bold to make the final 8-7 and another exciting win for the Rush . They are home again on Saturday , February 25 when Calgary Roughnecks come to Sasktel Centre .

Lots of action this week in the NHL including another huge milestone recorded . Sidney Crosby scored his 1000th career point last week and is the third player this year to achieve that mark . Alex Ovechkin and Henrik Sedin both scored their 1000th point this season but Crosby achieved the milestone in just 757 games . Crosby is the 12th fastest and 11th youngest player to reach the 1000 point plateau which is a great achievement in itself , but even more so because at this time in the game it is so difficult to score points . While 1000 in 757 seems impressive it should be noted that The Great One Wayne Gretzky racked up a thousand in only 424 games . Now from a young star to the oldest player in the NHL , Jaromir Jagr turned 45 last week and on his birthday showed he still had it , scoring his 1900th career point . Jagr is second on the All-Time Points list but still has a long way to go to catch Gretzky who has a mind blowing 2857 NHL points .
Last weekend was the NBA ’ s turn to have a little fun . All-Star Weekend was in New Orleans last week and all the stars showed up for the festivities . It all started on Friday with the celebrity game where the East dominated their way to an 88-59 win . On Saturday was the skills competition that included the Skills Relay , Three-Point shooting , and the always exciting Slam Dunk contest . Kristaps Porzingis became the tallest player to win the Skills Relay at 7 foot 3 inches tall . Porzingis nailed the three-pointer to take the win over Gordon Hayward . The three-point contest was won by Houston Rockets guard Eric Gordon in a tie breaking round against Cavs forward Kyrie Irving . Two-time Slam dunk champion Aaron Gordon fell apart this year missing dunks and failing to complete a dunk on his second round . Indiana Pacer Glenn Robinson scored a 50 on his final dunk where he jumped over the mascot for a backwards slam to take the title over Phoenix Suns rookie Derrick Jones Jr . Capping off All-Star weekend was the always high scoring NBA All-Star Game . With basically zero defence being played , the West took the win by a score of 192-182 . Lebron James became the first player ever to score over 300 points in his All- Star career . Hometown player Anthony Davis won the All-Star game MVP . The Pelicans forward scored 52 points in his home arena during the big game Sunday Night .
