The Martensville Curling played host to the 2017 Provincial Firefighters Men ’ s Curling Championship . Garnett Zummack , director of the Firefighters Curling Association , was pleased with the weekend and facility . “ Martensville has done a great job once again as this is the third time we have held this event here ”, commented Zummack . Bernie Bonder , the regional organizer from Warman was very pleased with the facility . “ This was the perfect venue with just the right number of sheets , and accommodations here were great ,” commented Bonder . There were seven teams entered this year from Martensville , Moosomin , Borden , Assiniboia , Saskatoon and two from Regina . The format was a double knockout AB format .
Jeff Gartner came out of the A event having a very close game against Greg Tarasoff out of Saskatoon who were the defending provincialists last year . Tarasoff also earned a silver medal at nationals in 2016 . Tarasoff had a hard battle to come back around for the B final . He beat Gartner forcing them to go to a second game with the double knockout format . Gartner would hold on to take the win and become Saskatchewan ’ s representative at nationals in Truro , Nova Scotia .
Martensville had one entry in the bonspiel with skip Ryan Cross , third Jason Matheson , second Kyle McAleese , and lead Mike Arnweiler who curled in the Consolation event . Curlers were guaranteed 4 games and the bonspiel had some cash incentives for the consolation teams .
Zummack is excited for next year in Assiniboia , who are hosting , as plans are already underway for the 60th anniversary of the Firefighter ’ s Provincials . Assiniboia is tying many activities together including having their Fireman ’ s Ball on the Saturday of the weekend . There is also no entry fee next year in celebration and Zummack is hoping this will attract more teams to the event .
