Refs Suspended After Ending Game Due to Parent Threats Shanine Sealey , Martensville Messenger

A recent incident at the Hague arena has many people talking , especially those with children involved in hockey . During a Bantam game between the Prince Albert Hurricanes and the Hague Royals that took place January 26th , referees felt as though things were taking an ugly turn and decided to call the game in the third period .
According to the referees that were officiating , the fans and coach of the Hurricanes began getting verbally abusive during the game , and were threatening the refs . The teams began playing the third period , and a couple of minutes into the third period , the referee ’ s decided that it was no longer safe to participate and put a stop to the game with 18 minutes left .
Parents of the Hurricanes players are disputing the referee ’ s accounts of the incident , denying that any threats took place . The parents believed that the referees were calling penalties unfairly for the Hurricane players and began to question their calls , with the referee ’ s ending the game after a woman that was in the stands got into a yelling match with one of the refs over a hit that she believed should have been a penalty . Bill Hoko , the coach for the PA Hurricanes , was kicked out of the game at the end of the second period for inappropriate comments towards the referees . One of the PA players was also suspended . The PA Hurricanes Manager , Glen Cey , has stated that he was in attendance during the game and did not hear any swearing from the stands , or from Hoko .
A parent of one of the Royals players commented that there were numerous parents from PA standing and yelling at the refs . “ The ref had enough verbal abuse and just called the game . Done . The PA parents were so mad , they protested and we ended up playing the last 18 minutes or so in Rosthern ,” the Hague parent , who preferred to be unnamed , explained . According to the Hague parent , one of the PA parents was pacing back and forth in the lobby waiting for the refs to come out of the change room , and another Hague parent claims to have witnessed a PA parent make a gun motion with their hand at one of the referee ’ s . “ It was absolutely brutal to watch . They got way out of hand ,” the parent continued . In the end , the local RCMP were called to the rink and escorted the refs to their vehicles , as they continued to receive threats .
Since the incident , two of the officiating refs , Michael Schwebius and Kyle Chudyk , have been suspended by the Saskatchewan Hockey Association ( SHA ). The SHA claims that the referees should have requested that all fans leave , and issued delay of game penalties if they didn ’ t . According to the SHA , the suspensions were due to the refs not following proper procedures . Linesman Austin Reimer was not suspended by the league .
