MIKES is one of Martensville’s hottest new places to ‘Too Good to Be True’ unwind and indulge with good food and good company. Not only is MR.MIKES providing Ciara O’Reilly, Martensville Messenger great service to the public at their new location, but are also going a few steps further within our community. MR. MIKES is involved with supporting our local KidSport™ program and is donating 20% of all dessert sales into it. This will be going on for the entire month of December. Make sure you come in to enjoy some dessert and support a great cause. Also taking place this holiday season is MR. MIKES’s ‘Deeds Well Done’ program. This program began on November 14th and will be running up until December 31st, so you have plenty of time to get some good deeds done and be rewarded for doing so. Here’s how it works: Nominate someone who you feel has really gone out of their way for the community; this person will be caring, thoughtful, and truly unselfish. Good deed doers need to know that they are recognized and appreciated, so winners of this program will be set to receive a $100 gift card to MR. MIKES restaurant and will also receive $500 for the charity of their choice. Not only will the good deed doers be rewarded, but those who nominated them and appreciated the works of a Good Samaritan will receive a $10 MR. MIKE’s gift card upon nomination. As one can already tell, MR. MIKES is a proud supporter of local community initiatives. “We want to be a part of the community and do our share with sponsorships and fundraising. In our other locations like Saskatoon, it is so big that sometimes you get lost in the mix but here we would like to be more upfront and as part of the community as we can,” says Jason Danroth, General Manager. If you know someone who should be recognized, make sure to visit www. deedswelldone.com to submit your entries and review contest rules. Thanks for your support, MR. (Ciara O’Reilly) Shanine Sealey, Martensville Messenger Although this time of year is essentially about being kind to others and giving back to those less fortunate, some tend to take advantage of others’ generous natures. There are many variations of holiday “grinches”; however, one common theme this year appears to be through social media platforms. One particular one that I have seen numerous times lately while scrolling through my Facebook news feed is the “Holiday Wine Bottle Exchange”. While the offer sounds extremely enticing, especially for us wine fans, typically if it sounds too good to be true….it is! In this offer, it states that the exchange requires somewhere between six and 36 wine lovers, and that “you only have to buy one bottle of wine, worth about $15 or more, and send it to another wine lover.” By doing this, it states that you will “receive from six to 36 wine bottles in return, depending on how many drinkers join.” This and others like it (gift card exchange, book exchange, etc.), are a new variation of a pyramid scheme, and many that participate in these offers, often end up with nothing in return for their participation. Another thing to be cautious about is providing your personal information, such as your address to strangers. This year, there have already been warnings on various Martensville community Facebook pages, urging others to avoid participating in a similar offer, the “Secret Sister Gift Exchange”. In this offer, participants are asked to send a $10 gift and in return will receive up to 36 gifts, once Word Search Answers MERRY CHRISTMAS 601 Centennial Dr. S. Not only are these offers dangerous, but pyramid selling is also illegal in Canada. According to the Competition Bureau of Canada, “A scheme of pyramid selling is illegal under the Competition Act. It is a multilevel marketing plan that includes either compensation for recruitment, required purchases as a condition of participation, inventory loading, or the lack of a buyback guarantee on reasonable commercial terms.” In the end, you may be better off organizing a gift exchange with a group of friends, or co-workers, where you know who your personal information is going to, and who you are dealing with.
