Local Stash Buster Sale Provides Shopping Opportunity While Giving Back

Shanine Sealey , Martensville Messenger
Martensville and area residents were provided the perfect opportunity to get their holiday shopping started this past weekend , or for those that prefer to be ahead of the game , finish their holiday shopping . “ We had a nice mix of crafters and home based businesses . It was an opportunity to get some Christmas shopping done . I wasn ’ t able to participate in the large Martensville craft sale this year , so I decided to host one of my own . I wanted to do a donation at the door and Martensville Free Pantry ( MFP ), as it is just starting up , made sense and I wanted to keep things local . There are needs here , just as much as there are in Saskatoon ,” Desirae Munro , organizer of the event , explained . Numerous shoppers attended the event , and many found that perfect gift they were looking for at the Stash Buster Sale . The Martensville Civic Centre was home to the Stash Buster Sale , held Friday , November 25th and Saturday , November 26th . Entrance to the sale was by donation to the Martensville Free Pantry ( MFP ), or with a $ 2 donation .
“ It means so much to the MFP to have the support of the people running the Stash Buster Sale . We would like to extend a big thank you to Desirae for getting the word out and for accepting donations ,” Marcy Cross of MFP stated . The Martensville Free Pantry is a grassroots community organization that accepts donations of food , hygiene products , baby products and other household necessities and helps distribute them to people within the community that are in need of such items . On Tuesday , November 29th , Cross announced that the City of Martensville will be providing

MFP an opportunity to utilize space at the Martensville Civic Centre to house donation items . This space will allow those wanting to donate to drop off items at the location , and for those that are in need of the donated items , they can pick up what they require in a discreet setting . “ We wanted the location to be indoors , well lit , and secure . Above all , we wanted it to be easily accessible and as anonymous as possible ,” Cross explained .
The Civic Centre is currently set up as a trial location , and if the location proves to be successful , it will become permanent . “ The Civic Centre was always my first choice as a location for the Martensville Free Pantry . I really enjoyed working with Dave Bosch at City Hall to get the pantry up and running in the hallway of the Civic Centre , right outside of the Martensville Information & Visitor Centre ,” Cross added .
A wide variety of items can be donated , including ; canned goods ( please check expiry dates ), crackers , cereal , pasta , hygiene products , baby items and other items that can keep , or are utilized in a daily routine . Gift cards are also welcome as donations .
The idea behind the MFP came when Cross read a post on Facebook about a similar project in the United States , and then discovered that food boxes were being installed in neighborhoods within Saskatoon . Cross then decided that this was something she wanted to do in Martensville . At the time , Cross was running for City Council and decided to wait until after the election to pursue her idea . “ People have since been slowly contacting me about making donations . Businesses , as well as individuals have come forward wanting to contribute and the word is slowly getting out to the Martensville community . I would like to thank The Medicine Shoppe , Theodore ’ s Bakery , The Kinsmen Club and the Lions Club .”
For more information about what can be donated , where to make a donation , or if you are in need of any of the items listed above , visit ‘ Martensville Free Pantry ’ on Facebook .
