For the last time in 2016 the CFL has shown us just how unpredictable it can be . The Calgary Stampeders lost two games all year and their quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell only lost one game . The Ottawa RedBlacks on the other hand , somehow ended up on top of the East Division with an 8-9-1 record . The 104th Grey cup in Toronto seemed as though it would be a cake walk for Calgary . Henry Burris and the RedBlacks had something else on their mind going into Sunday . The 41-year-old Burris came storming out of the gates , scoring a touchdown on their first possession . Mitchell and the Stamps responded quickly with a first possession touchdown of their own . But after that , nothing happened as expected . Ottawa kept rolling and the Stamps
Information may not be current due to submission deadline were stumped . By the third quarter the RedBlacks had a a surprising 27-7 lead and Bo Levi Mitchell had thrown three interceptions for the first time this season . The Stampeders
did not give up , rallying back to 33-30 with just 1:38 to go in the game . Against all odds , the onside kick ended up in the hands of the Stampeders and they were able to make one final push . After a pass interference call brought them to the one yard line , Calgary made a questionable play call . They sent third string quarterback Andrew Buckley in to try to punch it in and took the ball out of the hands of the CFL ’ s leading rusher Jarome Messam . Buckley failed to make the plunge and the Stamps settled for a field goal to tie the game . For just the third time in CFL history the Grey Cup was going to overtime . Ottawa was up first and Burris completed the pass to Ernest Jackson for the touchdown but left the door open for Calgary as they missed the 2-point conversion . Calgary took a shot for the endzone on their first play in overtime but the ball slipped through the fingers of the intended target . Mitchell threw two more incomplete passes and the Ottawa RedBlacks were crowned Grey Cup Champions for the first time . Veteran Quarterback Henry Burris threw for an astonishing 461 yards and three touchdowns and was named Grey Cup MVP .
It ’ s looking to be a better year for the Canadian teams in the NHL this year . The Montreal Canadiens are atop the league standings and if the playoffs were to start right now , three Canadian teams would contend . Things are still not so great for the Western Conference Canadians teams however , other than the Edmonton Oilers . The Flames , Jets , and Canucks are lying in the basement of the NHL and things aren ’ t looking up for any of them . The Flames are without their leading scorer Johnny Gaudreau until the New Year but goaltender Chad Johnson has improved his play dramatically over the past few games earning five wins in his last seven starts .
