in the Words of musician eric taylor
The
Martensville
Messenger
recently
interviewed Eric Taylor to
talk about music, writing
and achieving dreams.
How long have you been
songwriting?
I have been writing
music ever since I was
competent enough to
pluck away on a piano
or guitar, starting around
age 12. I have always
loved combining chords,
rhythm and melody in a
way that inspires me, or
excited my imagination.
It started off with little
tid-bits of ideas, riffs, or
instrumental pieces. Then
when I started to sing I
could piece together a full
song! I'm 25 now so 13
year long process!
What was the first song
you wrote, and what
influenced you to write
it?
Some of the really early
stuff is all a blur! But one
that sticks out is a song
called Midnight Lights
that I still love playing,
and a reworked version
might actually make
it to the next album. It
was inspired by a tough
decision I had to make
in regards to leaving
those I loved behind to
pursue music out west in
Vancouver.
Do you write all your
own music?
Yes, I write all my own
music - all of my solo
releases have been written
by me. I have been getting
into co-writing with
fellow musicians and artists,
and love it!
Do you come up with your
music video ideas?
I usually come up with
some general ideas and have
somewhat of a vision for
the video. It’s a fun process
and I have been able to
work alongside some really
talented
producers
that
take my initial ideas and
develop them into something
awesome.
What musicians inspire/
influence you?
It’s a long list, and is always
increasing as time goes on,
but more recently I have been
really inspired by bands like
Frightened Rabbit, Hozier,
Mumford and Sons, Kaleo,
Matt
Corby,
The Lumineers.
Lacie Munholland, Martensville Messenger
really great.
What’s your favourite song
on your eP?
My favorite song on the
album is probably the title
track “Dreams in Colour.” It
always brings me so much
joy to play and keeps me
on the path of pursuing my
dream, even when I’m down
and out.
You’ve had success in
saskatchewan (saskmusic
intune CD, rawlco radio,
finals of Searchlight) –
what have you taken from
this success?
It’s been a busy year and
I am so grateful for all
of the amazing programs
this province has to offer.
SaskMusic is an incredible
resource for artists and
the team has helped me so
much over the past year.
Rawlco’s 10K20 Contest
is an amazing program. To
be able to record my entire
EP with their support was
huge for me. I think we are
so lucky as Canadians to
have the various branches
of CBC radio. They do a
great job of adding to this
incredible music industry
in Canada and I’ve very
much enjoyed being a part
of Searchlight.
some artists are hesitant
to have their music
on a platform such as
Spotify – where listeners
pay a subscription but
don’tactually buy the
song/album.
What’s it like
to have an eP
out there for
the world to
hear?
It’s amazing. I
have spent a lot
of time writing
and perfecting
my craft. I
really wanted
to wait until I
had music that
was worthy of
sending
out
to the world,
and I think all
that hard work
has paid of
