Public Parks And land renamed To Honour Past Contributors To The Community

Two Martensville residents and one former Saskatchewan school district are being officially recognized by the City for their contributions to the community . Two local parks have been renamed in honour of Martensville residents , and one large area of green space , which will become a park , has been named in honour of the previous Saskatchewan school district that owned the land where Martensville ’ s elementary schools are being built .
“ Our vibrant and growing community would not be what it is today without those who came before us and worked hard to nurture development and community culture ,” says Kent Muench , Mayor of the City of Martensville . “ We feel it ’ s important to recognize these individuals and organizations , and naming areas where the public can gather for recreation is one way we can do that .”
The names were chosen according to the city ’ s Civic Naming Policy which sees submissions from the public reviewed by a Parks Naming Committee , appointed by City Council . The Committee proposed the names to City Council , which made the final decision at their August 16th Council Meeting .
The following parks / greenspaces have been renamed as follows :
• Municipal Reserve MR62 - Rose Leaf Park ( located next to the new elementary schools under construction in Lake Vista )
• Sunset Tot Lot Park - Munday Park ( located at the corner of Stone Terrace and Enns Crescent )
• 4th Avenue North Park - Unrau Park ( located in the 200 block of 4th Avenue North )
Municipal Reserve MR62 , located in Lake Vista at the site of the new elementary schools , was originally owned by the Saskatchewan Valley School Division , and registered in the name of the Rose Leaf School Division . In 2000 the Town of Martensville purchased the property . To pay homage to the original land owner and registered name , the area has been named Rose Leaf Park .
Merle Ruth Munday was an active member of Martensville for many years , and was a past recipient of Citizen of the Year . For 10 years she was very active with the Fire Department and was instrumental in the development and implementation of the First Responder Program . Merle was also responsible for creating the Martensville Banner newspaper , including gathering information , formatting and printing the paper that was delivered to all residents ’ homes . Merle was also very involved in ringette , coordinating ice times , registration and entering Martensville teams to play in the Saskatoon Ringette League .
While a formal nomination was not submitted for Gordon Unrau , the Naming Committee suggested the 4th Avenue North Park be named in his honour based on Gordon ’ s history in contributing to the development of the community . Gordon served on City Council from 1966- 1969 ( when Martensville was still considered a Village ), and in 1970 , after Martensville was named a Town . He taught at Martensville Elementary School through the 1960 ’ s and was an active business owner in Martensville .
Signage bearing the new park names will be installed in the near future .
More information on our parks can be found at Martensville . ca under Living Here , Parks and Pathways .
