Food Trucks in martensville

Lacie Munholland , Martensville Messenger
As food trucks are becoming more popular in larger urban centres , the City of Martensville is facing the decision whether or not to create a food truck bylaw . The topic was brought up at the July 12th City Council meeting , and most councilors had questions of safety and practicality , or were not in favour of food trucks operating in the city .
City Councilor ’ s discussed the advantages and disadvantages of having food trucks in the city . One councilor mentioned that if there were a bylaw created , food trucks would have to be inspected due to carrying propane . Other council members are concerned with the noise made by the trucks , and the potential danger of young kids running into the street to access the trucks . Other concerns surround the short time period that food trucks are in town ( mostly the summer months ), and worry that they will draw business away from restaurants that are operational
year-round .

has
concerns
that “ if food trucks do
come in , sales of newly
established businesses may be damaged by the new direct competition .”
Currently in Martensville , a food truck needs a $ 75 business license for every location that they stop and serve food . This creates challenges for food truck owners wanting to move around or attend special events . One food truck hoping to make the streets of Martensville happier is Allison ’ s Scoop Ice Cream .
Allison ’ s Scoop Ice Cream management disagrees with the lack of support given to food trucks from the City of Martensville . Allison ’ s Scoop Ice Cream started operating this year and is based out of Martensville . While based in Martensville , Allison ’ s Scoop Ice Cream has had a more positive experience elsewhere : “ Warman is great to operate in – they are very business friendly and help out in any way they can . Many people can ’ t believe the bylaws in Martensville , and have complained to the City . Others are surprised that we are based in Martensville but operate in Warman . The City says they are looking into making food truck rules , and might have some in place next year . We ’ re frustrated that it takes a year to change a couple of bylaws ,” commented Allison ’ s Ice Cream Scoop management .
Allison ’ s Scoop Ice Cream is asking the City to change two bylaws : Advertising Noises , and a bylaw regarding being a ‘ direct seller ’. The Advertising
Noises by law prohibits persons to “ advertise any event or merchandise by ringing bells , blowing whistles , calling loudly , playing music , playing any type of musical instrument , playing or using any type of noise making instrument , or by the use of loud speakers of other devices for the amplification of sound , or by any other audible means , on any street or other public place or in any building or premises with the intention or result that the sound therefrom shall be or is audible to persons using or frequenting any street or other public place .” The ‘ direct seller ’ bylaw applies to those who “ do not have a business premises in the Town ”. Allison ’ s Scoop Ice Cream is ultimately restricted by the requirement of a $ 75 business license . Allison ’ s Scoop Ice Cream management is asking that the people of Martensville sign a petition or call the City of Martensville if they would like to see the ice cream truck driving down the streets of Martensville .
While the current conversation surrounding food trucks in Martensville has swayed more to the negative side , there still is potential if citizens decide to support food trucks becoming a part of Martensville ’ s food culture . rCmP Find impaired Driver inside Parked vehicle near Warman On August 7 at 12:30 am police checked a vehicle that was parked on the side of a road near Warman .
