Since elderberry is a food like herb or high dose/low toxicity herbal remedy you can take it often in good amounts. The recommended dosage for the onset of a cold is to take 2tsp at least 4 times a day. For flu treatment, take up the dosage to 1 tablespoon 4 times daily. Or, for a daily preventative add a bit of syrup to yogurt, teas or pancakes to sweeten things up. Precautions should be taken for people with autoimmune conditions because this herb will stimulate the immune system. Also, a small percentage of people may experience nausea when taking high or consistent dosages. If this occurs, simply lesson the frequency of intake or stop all together.

You can find these healing plants growing from Florida to Canada and some parts of the lower west coast. If you don’t have the pleasure of having one in your back yard, you can order the dried berries from bulk herbal companies to make your syrup. If wild crafting, make sure to have at least 3 reputable sources to ID your plant and then harvest no more than one third of the plant, leaving the other two thirds for other animals and for the plant to propagate and sustain itself.

Elder and many other plants are wonderful choices for supporting health and wellness. May we all remember to look to our plant allies for good health and happiness.
